As we continue our alumni series, “Where Are They Now,” travel in time with us as we follow our graduates on their journeys and discover how An Achievable Dream positively impacted their lives. Also featured in this series are each graduating class’s sponsor to share their inspiration for supporting their class and a reflection from AAD president and CEO, Dr. Lee Vreeland, on each alumni. In this feature, we are highlighting Class of 2020 graduate, Kaleb Coleman.
Tell us where you are, what you’re doing now, and the accomplishment or life milestones you’re most proud of!
Currently, I work at the Newport News Police Department in Property and Evidence, where I collect evidence from various officers, key it into the system, and store it in our warehouse. I am also responsible for returning property to citizens and providing evidence to investigators. My most recent accomplishment is purchasing a new car!
What about An Achievable Dream do you feel most prepared you for the career and life you have now?
An Achievable Dream prepared me for my career in more ways than I can even imagine. AAD provided me with the opportunity to participate in the Young Adult Police Commissioners program, which paved the path for me to work with the NNPD. I often think about how the skills I learned at AAD, such as Speaking Green and professionalism, still help me. When I think of AAD, I immediately think of how much the faculty and staff care about their students. Everyone, including the cafeteria staff, custodial staff, and teachers, showed a genuine concern for every student that I don’t think you get at many schools. I am grateful for everything AAD has done for me.
What is next for you?
I am focused on saving money and becoming more independent.
From our President and CEO, Dr. Lee Vreeland:
Kaleb is a polite and driven young man. He is a diligent worker who has always taken advantage of every resource offered to him. Kaleb has a heart for volunteering and was often called upon to represent his class. His determination is evident, and I have no doubt that he will reach his goals in life! Kaleb often expresses his appreciation for An Achievable Dream. He continues to encourage his fellow classmates and AAD high school students to take advantage of every opportunity AAD provides to them.
