Where Are They Now? An Update from the Class of 2013

As we continue our alumni series, “Where Are They Now,” travel in time with us as we follow our graduates on their journeys and discover how An Achievable Dream made a positive impact on their lives. Also featured in this series are each graduating class’s sponsor to share their inspiration for supporting their class and a reflection from AAD president and CEO, Dr. Lee Vreeland, on each alumni. In this feature, we are highlighting Class of 2013 graduate, Katelynn Brownlee.

Tell us where you are, what you’re doing now, and the accomplishment or life milestones you’re most proud of!

I am currently back home in Newport News, VA. I work at CarMax as a Customer Specialist and a Business Office Lead in Training. My recent accomplishments are obtaining my Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Virginia Commonwealth University, and having a short story published in a university literary magazine.

What about An Achievable Dream do you feel most prepared you for the career and life you have now?

As someone who is typically more reserved, my current job challenges me daily to step outside of my comfort zone, and put myself in a position of leadership and mentorship among my peers. I owe a tremendous amount of thanks to An Achievable Dream which helped to build my ability to lead others and, in turn, nurture those same skills in others.

What is next for you?

I am looking to obtain my Masters in Business Administration while pursuing my passion for writing by working on my first novel, which I hope to have published in the near future.

From our President and CEO, Dr. Lee Vreeland:

When you think of Katelynn, you can’t help but think of her beautiful smile and personality that changes someone’s worst day to their best day. Katelynn is one of the most compassionate, gracious, and humble young adults I have ever met! Paired with her intelligence, drive, and passion, the sky is the limit for Katelynn! In fact, I anxiously await her first novel…. I cant wait to read it!

Continue reading to learn about why the graduating class sponsor from 2013, Aubrey and Peggy Layne, chose to invest in the Dream.

As class sponsors, we knew that The Layne Scholars would make a difference not only for themselves but also their family and community.  This was the best investment we could have made to ensure they had a bright future as good citizens and capable leaders.  We are proud to have been a part of their lives as they pursued their dreams.
