As we continue our alumni series, “Where Are They Now,” travel in time with us as we follow our graduates on their journeys and discover how An Achievable Dream made a positive impact on their lives. Also featured in this series is a reflection from AAD president and CEO, Dr. Lee Vreeland, on each alumni. In this feature, we are highlighting Class of 2011 graduate, Josh Thompson.
Tell us where you are, what you’re doing now, and the accomplishment or life milestones you’re most proud of!
I’m a Federal Merchant Able-Seamen with the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration. On June 12th, I celebrated 4 years in this career.
What about An Achievable Dream do you feel most prepared you for the career and life you have now?
An Achievable Dream prepared me on how to code switch (adjusting my vocabulary to tailor it to my surroundings). As a result of An Achievable Dream, I know how to walk into a job interview well groomed, speak confidently and firmly, and communicate my worth to others.
What is next for you?
What’s next for me is entrepreneurship, however I plan on sharing more details once my business partner and I officially launch.
Now, you will read a reflection from our President and CEO, Dr. Lee Vreeland on Josh’s journey.
I have the most candid memories of Josh. He was one of the funniest kids I’ve ever met and he had the biggest heart! I believe he also gave me a gray hair or two with his playful and sometimes mischievous disposition! Josh was a part of the first graduating class from the AAD Middle and High School, so he navigated his own path as a member of that group of Dreamer trailblazers. I cannot express how proud I am of the young man that Josh has developed into today. It has truly been a blessing to watch his journey and I know the best is yet to come for him.
