Where Are They Now? An Update from the Class of 2007

As we continue our alumni series, “Where Are They Now,” travel in time with us as we follow our graduates on their journeys and discover how An Achievable Dream made a positive impact on their lives. Also featured in this series are each graduating class’s sponsor to share their inspiration for supporting their class and a reflection from AAD president and CEO, Dr. Lee Vreeland, on each alumni. In this feature, we are highlighting Class of 2007 graduate, Lakisha Carney.

Tell us where you are, what you’re doing now, and the accomplishment or life milestones you’re most proud of!

I’m currently a Florida resident with my husband and 2-year-old daughter. I am the CEO of a nonprofit, TTEOL Wellness Counseling, Inc. An Achievable Dream Academy taught me that education and good character go a long way! I held on to that and as a result, I have proudly obtained two degrees. I received a bachelor’s degree in graphic design with a concentration in videography, and a master’s degree in organizational communication with a concentration in public affairs from Bowie State University, an HBCU (historically black college and university), home of the Bulldog Nation. From there I was blessed to obtain a Top Secret Clearance and work for the FBI for 5 years.

What about An Achievable Dream do you feel most prepared you for the career and life you have now?

Achievable Dream prepared me to never give up. I remember the atmosphere was always encouraging us that we could do the impossible if we just try. If we failed, at least we’d figure out what doesn’t work, and then try again. I can say I experienced this when I had my daughter in 2018 and I realized I was on a career path that no longer served my passion to help others. This journey back to my purpose was clear and I knew that helping people fulfills me. Since this journey began, I’ve established myself alongside my husband, who is the CEO of Monster Maker Educational & Athletic Center, as his contracted Sports Nutrition Specialist. Through that partnership I’ve developed my nonprofit, TTEOL Wellness Counseling, Inc., where we utilize a duel approach that provides counseling and consulting services that are specific to our client‘s individual nutritional and fitness needs. My passion for nutrition grew because I had to find my own path back to a healthier me after gaining 90 pounds from my pregnancy. I was inspired to help others through that experience.

What is next for you?

I am truly excited for the next chapters in my life and I’ve realized that this life is truly what you make it! I give honor to the most high God who is first in my life and all I do. I’m blessed to be in the position I am in today to share my experiences and knowledge in nutrition, fitness, and all things motivational through my new vlog (video blog) entitled TTEOL talks. I hope to manifest it into a talk show in the near future on a network! I am honored to be the blue group’s class feature for the 20th anniversary of the first graduating class. Thank you An Achievable Dream for believing in me!

Now, you will read a reflection from our President and CEO, Dr. Lee Vreeland on Lakisha’s journey.

Lakisha has always had a quiet determination and energy that guided her. No matter how high the bar was set, Lakisha was successful because she didn’t stop until she achieved it. When I think of Lakisha, the first few words that come to mind are: happy, energetic, intelligent, graceful, and strong. Her life most certainly manifests these traits. I can’t wait to see what the next chapter holds for Lakisha! It will no doubt be amazing!

We chose to sponsor a class of An Achievable Dream students because we see real, tangible results in the lives of these students. We know we are helping them rise above personal circumstances to become hardworking, energetic citizens. The kids at An Achievable Dream Academy are eager to learn and good to their core and we are very proud to be part of a small piece of their life story. We are honored to share in Walter and Anne’s dream and will continue to support An Achievable Dream’s mission wholeheartedly.
